Role of a Manager in SCRUM

Gone are the days where Managers would sit and decide what needs to be done and who does it. In today’s world Managers have to be more hands on. They are the first line of leaders among the organization. Read my article on technical-management so see what it means to be a manager in todays Agile organization.

I came across this article form Pete Deemer at the Scrum Training Institute. He has written an excellent article on the role of the manager in Scrum.

“What’s the role of a manager in Scrum? I’m a manager, and since I’m not mentioned in the definition of the Scrum roles, and the team is self-organizing, does that mean I’m supposed to just… disappear?”

Scrum Master

I have been using XP practices(TDD, Refactoring, Pair programming) for a while now and earlier this year started learning about SCRUM & applying it for couple projects. Recently Finished a project which went on for 6 months using SCRUM (I think it was pretty good). With all the knowledge that I have been gaining with Agile I thought it would be best if I can get certified. So I started looking out for certifications and also started talking to couple people at work to get this going.

So Finally this week me and couple others attended a 2 day Scrum Master training and officially I am a “Certified Scrum Master” check out here if you want to know what this means. I kind of liked the exercises that went through and all the discussion we had. However, I felt that lot of the things that we discussed were already familiar to me.  Now I would like to help out teams to start using SCRUM in the official way rather than all the custom tailored way :-)

The trainers were Ron Jeffries & Chet Hendrickson

This is a good book if you ever have to have your company move towards the Scrum adaption. We have been using scrum for a while now and I think this book provides all the details the management needs to pursue th scrum adaption.
